John William Waterhouse
St. Eulalia

1885
Oil on canvas, 186 x 117.5 cm.
Tate Gallery, London

In the early medieval accounts St. Eulalia's body is cast out naked after she has died, but a snowfall then covers her. In this rather disturbing painting there is not enough snow to shield the nakedness from the viewer's gaze.
